European Council: European leaders endorse new
Round
European leaders affirmed their commitment to
a new round of World Trade Organisation negotiations
at the European Council in Sweden.
The following statement was issued by the Swedish
presidency on their behalf: ' A strong, open
and rule-based multilateral trading system contributes
to the Union's strategic goals, including the
promotion of economic growth, sustainable development
and the social dimensions of globalisation. The
launch of an ambitious and balanced new round
of multilateral trade negotiations at the 4th
WTO Ministerial Conference in Doha in November
remains the objective of the Union. Such a round
should respond to the interests of all WTO members,
and in particular to those of the developing countries,
and demonstrate that the trading system can respond
to the concerns of civil society. The European
Council welcomes the new basis for close transatlantic
co-operation as stated in the declaration from
the Göteborg EU-US Summit. All WTO partners are
urged to work constructively and flexibly to forge
a consensus in Doha.'

Spotlight: EDUCATION
Education is the core investment in our societies
future. Today, on both side of the Atlantic, educationnal
issues are becoming a growing concern. The new
US President put it as his top-priority followed
by a large popular consensus that this ought to
be; and in Europe, both the Member-States and
the EU are trying to cope with the huge consequences
of both the new technologies and the very changes
of education as a social process.
Main aspects: the American educational system
(the necessity of reforming the entire state education;
Bush reforms;Charter-Schools); higher education
in Europe; e-learning.

'Prospects for a new transatlantic trade relationship'
A report by the Committee on Economic Affairs
and Development Rapporteur: Mr Bonet Casas, Andorra,
Liberal, Democratic and Reformers’ Group
The report underlines the support of the Council
of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly - strengthened
through Canada's and Mexico's recent observer
status - in favour of efforts further to strengthen
transatlantic economic links. The Assembly offers
its assistance in this process in its capacity
as a parliamentary forum for numerous international
institutions in the economic and financial field.
Parliamentarians, the report concludes, must ensure
that the concerns of citizens - be they social,
cultural, environmental or labour-related - are
not forgotten as we shape the economic relations
across the Atlantic and across the world in the
new century.
